How I Became A Badfinger Fan
I borrowed the "Sounds of the Seventies" cds from a friend of mine a few years ago and it
included "Without You" by Harry Nillson....I immediately fell in love with the song and
read the insert liner notes about the song....It said that Harry Nillson heard the song at a
party in the early seventies and thought it was a John Lennon song....but he found out it
was a BADFINGER tune and he covered the song in 1972.....So I thought mmm...yes,
I've heard of BADFINGER only because they were associated with the Beatles' Apple
company but I had no idea they wrote "Without You" .....So I decided to listen to some of
their music at a cd store....I listened to the Greatest Hits...I remember liking "Come and
Get It" but I wasn't to sure I wanted the disc and I DID NOT BUY THE CD (big
mistake)!!!! However in the coming weeks I thought "that Badfinger stuff did sound really
cool!! so I drove an hour and a half back to the cd store and bought it!!! I taped it off and
listened to it constantly in the car on my way to and from college....I fell in love with
songs like Believe Me, Better Days, and No Matter What and Flying.....I was devistated
to read in the cd insert that Pete and Tommy had commited suicide, and I remember
looking at the picture on the cd wondering which ones were Pete and Tom...I couldn't
even identify the members of the group!! Even from the start I was drawn to Joey and his
songs....I'm not sure why, just his voice, the way he looks, and his songs.....Joey was
definitely my favorite member of the group...however I think they're all awesome!!!
Anyway, that's how it all started and in two years I accumulated all the cds, even the two
Warners bootlegs cds and Airwaves and Say No More and Natural Gas on vinyl and a lot
of bootlegs....I want to see Joey in concert and meet him but it just has not happened as of
yet.....My dream is that Joey, Mike, Bob Jackson, and Ron Griffiths get together for a
Badfinger reunion tour or album....however I doubt if that will ever occur..
I just think it's a sin that Badfinger, one of the most talented groups in the world never got
the recognition they deserved! but that's the tragedy isn't it?....the great rock-n-roll rip
off!!!
